NGO work is vital for driving inclusive rural development by empowering communities, improving livelihoods, strengthening governance, & promoting sustainable environmental practices at the grassroot.

The Institute for Rural Development (IRD), established in 2000, is a non-profit organization committed to advancing sustainable environmental practices and enhancing the livelihoods of rural communities across Karnataka. Registered under the Karnataka Societies Act of 1960, IRD primarily focuses on empowering women through the formation of self-help groups, skill development initiatives, and income-generating activities that promote self-reliance. Starting its journey with just five villages, IRD has significantly expanded its reach to over 25 taluks, implementing large-scale, community-driven development programs. The organization works closely with Panchayati Raj Institutions and local governance bodies to strengthen decentralized governance and improve rural infrastructure and service delivery. Programs

Jal Jeevan Mission

Under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), IRD – Institute for Rural Development, Vijayapur, in collaboration with the Government of Karnataka and Zilla Panchayat, is implementing a comprehensive water and sanitation programme across rural taluks of Vijayapur district. As part of this initiative, IRD is promoting sustainable access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation practices, and water conservation, while also driving community awareness through school-based activities such as essay writing and drawing competitions, engaging 90–100 students to encourage responsible water usage and environmental stewardship.
