IRD-Institute for Rural Development , Vijayapur
NGO work is vital for driving inclusive rural development by empowering communities, improving livelihoods, strengthening governance, & promoting sustainable environmental practices at the grassroot.
The Institute for Rural Development (IRD), established in 2000, is a non-profit organization committed to advancing sustainable environmental practices and enhancing the livelihoods of rural communities across Karnataka. Registered under the Karnataka Societies Act of 1960, IRD primarily focuses on empowering women through the formation of self-help groups, skill development initiatives, and income-generating activities that promote self-reliance. Starting its journey with just five villages, IRD has significantly expanded its reach to over 25 taluks, implementing large-scale, community-driven development programs. The organization works closely with Panchayati Raj Institutions and local governance bodies to strengthen decentralized governance and improve rural infrastructure and service delivery. Under the leadership of its founder, Dr. Babu G. Sajjan—an expert in environmental program implementation—IRD has successfully led initiatives in renewable energy, solid waste management, rural sanitation, and vermicomposting. Its key interventions also include watershed development (covering over 93,000 hectares across 22 projects), agriculture and natural resource management, and Jal Jeevan Mission programs focused on water and sanitation. In addition, IRD has actively contributed to public health and environmental sustainability through nutrition programs, COVID-19 awareness and vaccination drives, plantation campaigns, ecosystem restoration efforts, and the strengthening of school infrastructure across more than 100 Gram Panchayats. With strong grassroots engagement and collaborations with over 15 government departments and donor agencies, IRD continues to deliver impactful, scalable, and sustainable solutions, having empowered more than 2,000 rural women to become economically independent while contributing to long-term environmental conservation.
