Anaemia Mitigation Programme
The Institute for Rural Development (IRD) launched the Anaemia Mitigation Programme (AMP) in October 2024 to combat the alarming prevalence of anaemia among children in Karnataka, a mission sparked by reports that nearly 3.2 lakh children were affected across the state. Following a pilot in Talikote where 39% of children tested positive, IRD transitioned from local action to a massive state-wide intervention. In a strategic partnership with Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur (SRMD) and Spandana NGO, and by leveraging the Favoured-K network to onboard 26 NGOs across 19 districts, the programme has already screened approximately 11 lakh beneficiaries. Utilizing a data-driven two-round screening model—identifying severe cases (Hb < 9) and conducting three-month follow-ups—the initiative maintains high efficiency, managing administrative costs at just ₹15 per screening despite a total value of ₹500 per test. With materials worth ₹5–6 crore currently deployed, IRD is rapidly scaling toward a short-term goal of 12 lakh screenings, an immediate target of 50 lakh, and a long-term vision to impact 1 crore lives, ensuring a healthier, anaemia-free future for the region.
